Authorities in southern Nigeria on Thursday officially extended a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Port Harcourt, the region’s oil capital, for a further week.
”The curfew is being extended for a further one week,” the state executive council announced.
The curfew was put in place last Friday after the military battled local gangs, leaving dozens of people dead.
Rivers state Governor Celestine Omehia had already said informally the curfew, initially imposed for one week, would stay in place at least until the morning of Monday 27 August.
In a separate development, one of the two gang leaders held responsible for several days of inter-gang violence in Port Harcourt two weeks ago, Ateke Tom, said he was surrendering to the state authorities.
There has been speculation in recent days in Port Harcourt, that Tom, the head of the Niger Delta Vigilante Movement, had struck a deal with the authorities. — AFP
