New campaign aims to save energy in Jo’burg

A new energy-saving initiative, targeting Johannesburg businesses and homes, has begun.

Launched by Talk Radio 702 presenter Jenny Crwys-Williams, the Power to the People campaign urges Johannesburg residents to save energy and protect the environment.

On Thursday, companies and Johannesburg residents have been asked to switch off lights and non-essential electrical appliances for an hour, at 9pm. Crwys-Williams said that the campaign was inspired by her observation of the large use of electricity in Johannesburg.

“The idea to launch a campaign like this came about when I saw just how much wasted energy is used by unoccupied buildings — it’s a travesty for the environment,” said Crwys-Williams.

Various corporate giants have pledged their support for this crusade and some of them will turn off the electricity in their entire buildings. These companies include Medi-Clinic in Sandton, Netcare 911, the JSE and the Mail & Guardian.

Smaller businesses include real estate company Zylmari Properties in Monument Park and Mandlovu Projects in Orange Grove.

“This is a powerful statement from Talk Radio 702, and is to be applauded,” said Barry Bredenkamp, operations manager of the National Energy Efficiency Agency, which promotes and advises on energy conservation.

“Gauteng is Johannesburg’s premier business hub and is the largest energy-consuming region in the country. If the area’s businesses and residents can prove how easy it is to save energy, the rest of the country can and should follow suit.”

It is only practical that appliances that are not in use be switched off, and the message that 702 is passing is that, whether you are a small business or a corporate giant, it is a good idea to participate.

Talk Radio 702 said that Eskom had voiced its support for the campaign and that its sister radio station, 567 Cape Talk, has urged Capetonians to join in the campaign.

While many people will be in the dark on Thursday evening, Crwys-Williams will be live in studio during Tom London’s show (Talk Radio 702 and 567 Cape Talk) to discuss this initiative, as well as take calls from listeners and provide energy-saving tips.
