Zandberg turns on the speed in Japan

South African swimming team captain Gerhard Zandberg was on top of the world after taking the 50m freestyle honours in the fastest time swam by a South African this year, at the International Swim Meeting in Tokyo, Japan, on Friday.

Pretoria-based Zandberg turned on the speed to win in 22,18 seconds, with Australian Eamon Sullivan (22,22) and Nick Brunelli (22,31) completing the podium positions.

Zandberg’s Northern Tigers club teammate Gideon Louw finished fourth in the same race in 22,82 seconds.

Port Elizabeth’s Shaun Harris made it a double triumph for South Africa as he won the 50m freestyle B final in 22,87 seconds.

Following his South African record-breaking achievement in the 400m individual medley earlier in the week, KwaZulu-Natal swimming star Riaan Schoeman impressed in finishing third in the B final of the 200m individual medley in 2:03,93.

South Africa’s men’s 400m individual medley relay team of Zandberg, Cameron van der Burgh and Garth Tune showed great enthusiasm but found the going tough as they finished sixth in 3:41,92, in a race won by the Japanese team.

At the tender age of 16 years, Western Province sensation Jessica Pengelly showed further signs of what is to come in her swimming career by finishing sixth in the 200m individual medley B final in 2:16,67. — Sapa
