Sundowns midfielder Leremi dies in car accident

South African international midfielder Gift Leremi (22) was killed after he lost control of his car and was flung out of his vehicle, Ekhuruleni Metro police said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Inspector Jimmy Maboko said Leremi had been driving his BMW along the R556, between Vaal Road and Brackendowns, Alberton, at 9pm on Monday, when he lost control.

”The car went off the road and overturned a number of times. He was then flung out of the vehicle.”

He said when the police arrived, Leremi was already dead.

His body was taken to a Germiston mortuary.

”Police are not sure at this stage about what had caused him to lose control of the vehicle, but we are investigating,” Maboko said.

Leremi had just returned from Cameroon where he played for Mamelodi Sundowns in an African Confederation Cup match at the weekend.

He joined Sundowns during the off-season after spending five seasons at Orlando Pirates.

Leremi, who had scored twice since his move to Sundowns, won four caps for South Africa, the last two years ago at the Concacaf Gold Cup in the United States. – Reuters, Sapa
