Mugabe govt presents succession Bill to Parliament

President Robert Mugabe’s government introduced a Bill to Parliament on Wednesday that would give the leader room to choose a successor if he were to retire.

Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa introduced the Bill in Parliament and said debate on the proposed law would start on Tuesday.

The Constitutional Amendment Bill seeks to give Parliament the power to elect a new president should the incumbent fail to serve a full term.

Zimbabwe’s opposition has said the Bill threatens to undermine its talks with the government, and that it was Mugabe’s latest attempt to tighten his grip on the country after nearly three decades in power. — Reuters
