Provisional agreement in motor strike

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and the Retail Motor Industry (RMI) have reached a provisional agreement regarding the strike in the motor components industry, Numsa said on Monday.

Spokesperson Mziwakhe Hlangani said Numsa members would be briefed about the agreement at local and regional offices on Tuesday.

If the workers agreed, the agreement would be signed at noon in Randburg, north of Johannesburg.

He declined to comment on the contents of the agreement, saying he would only be in a position to do so after it had been signed. Workers in the motor-components industry went on strike on September 12 over wages.

Numsa demanded a 9% increase, and a minimum wage of R2 200 a month or R509 a week.

The Retail Motor Industry offered a raise of between 8,5% and 10% based on workers’ grading. – Sapa
