The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) will implement a pilot onramp metering project on four interchanges on Gauteng’s N1 Ben Schoeman highway from Wednesday, a Sanral spokesperson said.
”With ramp metering, the traffic flow on to the freeway is controlled to prevent stop-go conditions on the freeway, thereby improving flow,” Priya Pillay said.
A traffic light will indicate green or red on the onramp for short periods during which one or a few vehicles per green light will be allowed through.
If the ramp meter is operational, it will change with short intervals between green and red. When not operational, it will just remain green, allowing vehicles to pass.
The four affected interchanges are Samrand southbound, Rooihuiskraal southbound and New Road north- and southbound. This is to be done during peak-hour traffic.
Pillay said camera law enforcement of the traffic signals will be carried out.
The project forms part of Sanral’s Intelligence Transport System, which was launched in October last year. — Sapa
