Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) president Willie Madisha has offered to step aside for a month while an independent commission of inquiry probes the R500 000 donation controversy, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Thursday.
Last month, Madisha came under fire from his own executive for the way he handled the matter of a R500 000 ”donation” to the South African Communist Party (SACP).
At the end of August, Madisha and a witness told police they delivered the donation to SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande in 2002.
Nzimande later denied ever receiving the R500 000 donation, allegedly made by businessman Charles Modise.
An SACP task team has found no credible evidence that the donation ever existed.
”Our political team reports that only four Cosatu-affiliated unions out of 21 demanded a vote of no confidence in Madisha,” the SABC said.
The commission of inquiry would consist of independent labour experts and was expected to report back in November.
According to the SABC, Madisha demanded that the inquiry would be independent. – Sapa
