Tenth body discovered in sugar-cane fields

Another decomposed body of a woman was found in the sugar-cane fields surrounding Umzinto’s Shayamoya township, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Sunday.

Superintendent Zandra Hechter said the body was discovered on Saturday when police were busy with their investigations in the area. This brings the total number of bodies found in the fields to 10 since September this year.

”There is a possibility of other bodies in the fields,” said Hechter.

The body will be sent for DNA tests and police are continuing with their search.

On Friday, skeletal remains of a woman were found by workers who were burning the sugar-cane fields at the time.

Police initially arrested five people, three women and two men, in connection with the murders.

Two were later released and two men and a woman appeared in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court on charges of abduction and murder last week.

Another 27-year-old man from Inanda was formally charged on Friday and is expected to appear in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court on Monday. — Sapa
