Two hurt in Jo’burg hospital rampage

A patient was shot and a guard stabbed when patients unhappy with their medication tried to flee the Sizwe Hospital in Edenvale on Tuesday, Johannesburg police said.

Spokesperson Captain Piet Mnyageni said the incident occurred at about 6.30am when patients attempted to leave the hospital premises.

”Patients were apparently unhappy with the medication they were receiving at the hospital,” said Mnyageni.

He said the guards tried to stop them but one patient produced a knife and stabbed one of the guards three times in his upper body.

”His colleague then reacted by firing a shot at the man,” said Mnyageni.

Both the guard and the patient were taken to the Edenvale Hospital and were in a critical but stable condition.

Police were investigating two cases of attempted murder, he said. — Sapa
