Police: Bomb attached to cash van in Durban

A bomb that was attached to a cash-in-transit vehicle in Durban was defused by the police’s bomb squad on Friday afternoon, police said.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge confirmed the incident at a shopping mall in Durban’s Montclair suburb, but said details were sketchy.

He said that a Coin Security vehicle had driven into the Montclair mall where a bomb was attached to the vehicle.

”The security guards alighted from their vehicle, locked it and called the police,” he said.

The police’s bomb squad was called out and disposed of the ”bomb device” in a ”controlled manner”.

No money was taken and no injuries were reported.

Mdunge said: ”It’s not really clear at this stage what happened, but a white Honda Ballade with no number plates was seen and may be linked to the incident.”

He was unable to provide details of how the device was attached to the vehicle.

Police were still on scene and investigating, he said. — Sapa
