Phone connections restored at East Rand home affairs

Telephone connections have been restored to East Rand offices of the Department of Home Affairs, a home affairs official said on Tuesday.

”All telephone services are working correctly,” the regional home affairs manager for Springs, Themba Ndebele, said.

The mistake was corrected after the Democratic Alliance (DA) wrote a letter to Department of Home Affairs Director General Mavuso Msimang informing him of the situation.

Msimang acted swiftly and set his chief financial officer to correcting the problem. He will compile a report on the incident, said Ndebele.

The lines had been out of order since last week. It is believed that the disconnection was due to unpaid telephone bills.

On Monday, DA home affairs spokesperson Mark Lowe said sources at the East Rand offices had said the overdue phone accounts were rumoured to run into hundreds of thousands of rands.

Home affairs spokesperson Jacky Mashapu could not be reached for comment on Tuesday. — Sapa
