Muziwendoda Kunene, the man caught up in the ”hoax email” saga, is expected to appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing charges of attempted murder.
Kunene was arrested in Kranskop in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday. The attempted murder charge was laid by his son.
Kunene was subcontracted by the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to intercept emails as part of Project Avani. He, former NIA boss Billy Masetlha and former head of information technology at the NIA Funi Madlala are accused of defrauding the NIA by falsifying ”emails” and presenting them as the truth.
Masetlha was acquitted by the Hatfield Magistrate’s Court last week on a separate charge of withholding information from the inspector general of intelligence.
Two weeks ago Muzi Kunene told the M&G about four incidents that prove the state is out to ”make [him] look like a lampooner — someone running away from his own shadows”.
The next day he was shot in the hand allegedly by a stranger who confronted him on a Pretoria street.
Kunene claims he is being victimised because of information he uncovered while working for the NIA, including details about corruption in the arms deal, in the Jacob Zuma case and in the police. – Sapa
