Kunene to be charged with murder, court hears

Muziwendoda Kunene, the man caught up in the hoax-email saga, will be charged with murder, the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court heard on Monday.

Prosecutor Simon Maluleka told the court that Kunene would be charged with the October murder of Ballito real-estate agent Lynne Hume.

His eldest son is a witness in that case, Maluleka told the court.

Kunene appeared in court on Monday on a charge of attempted murder after he allegedly shot his eldest son, Msebenzi Kunene, in November.

Kunene’s attempted murder case was postponed to December 10 for further investigation.

He will be held at the Atteridgeville police station until then.

Kunene’s legal council, Imraan Haffegee, asked if he could be kept in a single cell since he feared for his life.

When it emerged that no single cells were available at the police station, the magistrate ordered the state and police to ensure that the accused’s safety was not ”compromised”.

Kunene, who was dressed in a black leather jacket, was supported in court by his wife, Belinda, and former spy boss Billy Masetlha.

Outside Court, Belinda said she believed their son was lying about the alleged attempt on his life by his father.

Kunene Jnr was not in court, but has made a statement to police in which he claims his father tried to kill him in November by shooting him through the ear, with the bullet exiting from his mouth.

In a separate matter, Kunene also stands accused under the Intelligence Services Oversight Act of withholding information from the inspector general of intelligence.

He also faces a separate charge of fraud relating to the same case.

The saga involves fake emails between African National Congress (NAC) leaders, discrediting ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma.

The emails allegedly implicated senior ANC members in a conspiracy against Zuma and ANC secretary general Kgalema Motlanthe. — Sapa
