Who said comedy was dead? It was certainly alive and well at Durban’s King Zwelethini Stadium on Wednesday night as SuperSport secured a 91st minute goal to beat Golden Arrows 1-0 in what turned out to be a comedy of errors.
In the end it was left to Lithe Mozambican midfielder Elias Pelembe to cannon a 20m shot in additional time into the roof of the net.
Two minutes earlier it seemed little more than a formality that the M-Net-owned club would be winging their way back to Randburg as losers after SuperSport goalkeeper Dennis Onyango fouled Vusumuzi Dhlamini to concede a reckless penalty.
But Arrows succeeded in shooting themselves in the foot as striker Norman Smith maintained the game’s pattern of woeful finishing by shooting tamely from the penalty spot and allowing Onyango to make amends with what was little more than a routine save.
It was difficult to say whether the sparse crowd of 2 000 were shedding tears of amusement or amazement as the teams set some sort of dubious record of inane play by not recording a single shot on target throughout the opening 45 minutes.
It was little better after the interval although Arrows’ Bafana Bafana midfielder, Kagisho Dikgacoi, was unfortunate when a loping header was barely centimetres wide of the post in the 72nd minute.
Goalkeeper Maseko then decided it was time to display his footwork by lazily dribbling the ball upfield in the 79th minute, Daine Klate dispossessed the Arrows’ player but failed to score in front of a gaping goal.
The general consensus was that neither team wanted to win the game. – Sapa
