South African singer Dozi spent a night in a police cell after he apparently had too much to drink and drove home after a family dinner in Mossel Bay, Beeld newspaper reported on Thursday.
”It was probably God’s way of telling me not to drive further,” Dozi was quoted as saying.
Dozi (41) was arrested on Tuesday night, spent the night in jail and was released the next morning after he sang a song to police officers, said Beeld.
Police spokesperson in the Southern Cape, Captain Malcolm Potjie, confirmed that ”a person” had been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol at about 11.40pm on Tuesday in Louis Fourie Road in Mossel Bay.
Potjie did confirm that the person was Dozi as the suspected drunk-driver will still have to appear in court.
Dozi’s agent, Ilza Roggeband, however said Dozi was alone in the vehicle when he skipped a red traffic light, Beeld said.
She said he was released after he sang Our Father in isiZulu to officers during the station’s morning scripture reading.
”I met a few very interesting guys in jail and cannot complain about the treatment I received from the police. They’re doing unbelievable work and I will always support them,” Dozi was quoted as saying. – Sapa
