Sudan retain Cecafa Cup

Sudan underlined their growing strength in African football when their second-string team beat Rwanda pn penalties to retain the East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup on Saturday.

Sudan won the penalty shoot-out 6-4 after the game ended 2-2 after extra time.

Rwanda were the more determined of the two sides as they fought their way back after trailing Sudan by two goals scored by Abdel Hamid Amaria in the 23rd minute and Modaher Eltaab at the start of the second half.

Haruna Niyonzima hit back for the Amavubi Wasps in the 47th minute and Abel Mulenda scored the equaliser 12 minutes later.

Sudan reached last year’s Cecafa final in Ethiopia, where they lost to guest team Zambia — who were only allowed to take home the prize money, leaving the Sudanese with the trophy.

They opted to field their development side to give the senior team ample time to prepare for next month’s African Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Earlier Uganda pipped Burundi 2-0 to take third spot with striker Hamisi Kitagenda scoring both goals in the second half. – AFP
