Najwa’s bail appeal postponed

The Cape High Court on Thursday postponed Najwa Pietersen’s second bail appeal to January 28, to be heard by a full bench instead of a single judge as initially planned.

Pietersen is to go on trial in the Cape High Court for the alleged murder of her famous husband, Taliep.

She first launched a bail application soon after her arrest, but it was refused by the Wynberg Regional Court.

She then appealed the denial of bail and was turned down a second time.

She then launched a second bail application in the Wynberg Regional Court, based on new facts — but that was also rejected.

Thursday’s Cape High Court proceedings before Judge President John Hlophe were to have been to appeal the second refusal.

Hlophe said the issues to be decided in the second appeal were complex and needed a full bench of two or three judges. — Sapa
