A ban on Sunday liquor sales was proposed as a part of the fight against drug and substance abuse among youths, outgoing African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) president Fikile Mbalula said on Monday.
”The ANCYL will propose that all clubs and taverns be banned from selling liquor on Sundays and their trading hours should be limited.”
Mbalula said this would promote responsible use of alcohol and a healthy lifestyle.
”There is nothing sexy or fashionable about drinking from six to six. Going to a tavern must be a cool thing — and not to abuse [alcohol],” he said.
He said that excessive drinking affected social orientation in society, especially of youths in townships.
The resolution was among many taken at the league’s national executive committee lekgotla (meeting) over the weekend. — Sapa
