YCL: Use of old SA flag in Ghana ‘an insult’

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Ghanaian local organising committee should apologise for using the old South African flag on Africa Cup of Nations posters, the Young Communist League (YCL) said on Friday.

In a statement, the YCL said it was ”flabbergasted” and ”despises” the posters put up in Ghana, symbolising South Africa but sporting the old flag.

”This is a clear insult to the South African soccer-loving fans in general and South Africans in particular,” the YCL said.

”It is regrettable that 14 years into our nascent democratic change in our country, the continental sporting bodies, particularly CAF still, regards our country as a bastion of apartheid and oppression.”

The league called on the South African Football Association and other soccer ruling bodies to investigate the reason for what it called ”provocative insults and disdain”. — Sapa
