Masetlha hoax-email case postponed in court

The alleged fraud case against former National Intelligence Agency (NIA) director general Billy Masetlha and his two co-accused was postponed in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court on Monday.

The charges against him relate to alleged hoax emails implicating senior African National Congress members in a conspiracy against former deputy president Jacob Zuma.

The case against Masetlha, IT specialist Muziwendoda Kunene and former NIA electronic surveillance manager Funokwakhe Madlala was postponed to Tuesday.

Following court proceedings, Kunene was taken to the Moot police station where he would be held in custody — relating to a separate murder charge he is facing.

In his evidence, computer expert Senior Superintendent Bernard Grobler said that Kunene’s seized laptop computer showed that the emails were modified on a flash drive inserted into the computer. It is not known to whom the flash drive belonged.

Masetlha was in November last year found not to have contravened the Intelligence Oversight Act by the Hatfield Community Court in Pretoria.

He was acquitted on charges of withholding information — on a botched attempt by the NIA to spy on businessman Saki Macozoma — from Inspector General of Intelligence Zolile Ngcakani.

Masetlha throughout the trial had denied guilt and was adamant that the inspector general had been furnished with all the information needed. — Sapa
