Four miners killed in rockfalls this week

Four Harmony Gold mine employees died in separate incidents at the Bambanani and Elandsrand mines this week, Solidarity said on Thursday.

”Solidarity erroneously reported that another Bambanani worker, who had been admitted to the intensive care ward of the Ernst Oppenheimer Hospital in Welkom, had died. The person is recuperating,” said Solidarity spokesperson, Reint Dykema.

In the first incident on Tuesday, two workers were killed and four injured following a rockfall at Harmony’s Bambanani mine near Welkom.

On Wednesday, two workers died at Harmony’s Elandsrand mine near Carletonville also as a result of a rockfall.

Both accidents involved rockfalls that occurred due to seismic activity. — Sapa
