Eagles finally show their class

What went wrong? That is the question the SWD Eagles have to ask themselves after defeating the Pumas 50-12 at Outeniqua Park on Saturday.

Throughout the season in the Vodacom Cup competition, the Eagles have not lived up to their reputation as a team for higher honours and promotion to Currie Cup status. On Saturday, however, they showed their class.

They ran in eight tries to the two of the visitors. The half-time score of 26-7 was a true reflection of the Eagles’ performance. They ran the ball from anywhere on the field, and the forwards and back line combined well.

Duwayne Smart on the left wing showed a lot of pace and his scintillating runs and two tries had the crowd on their feet. Flyhalf Ambrose Barends not only scored a try but also converted five of the Eagles’ tries.

However, the try of the day must go to the Pumas wing Gordon Pangeti who ran 50m to score.

The only disconcerting statistic of the game was the 50 free kicks and penalties that were awarded. However, the referee wasn’t to blame.

Unfortunately, the Eagles can’t qualify for the quarterfinals of the competition. They lie fifth on the points table.

In Port Elizabeth, the Mighty Elephants deservedly beat the Falcons 38-36 in a rousing rugby encounter. The Elephants trailed 17-10 at half-time. — Sapa
