Moriarty to step down as DA Jo’burg caucus leader

Mike Moriarty is to step down as Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus leader in Johannesburg to make himself available for nomination as a member of the province’s legislature in next year’s parliamentary election, the party said on Wednesday.

Moriarty would leave his current post on September 1.

He said stepping down in September would give the party time to choose a successor and give candidates time to decide whether to run or not.

”Our caucus traditionally holds elections of office-bearers at its first meeting in September of each year. I have decided to take advantage of that opportunity. But it is necessary for me to make the announcement early, so that all of the necessary processes may take place,” he said.

He said it had been an honour to serve as caucus leader over the past 11 years. — Sapa
