Stars striker aims for the top

Free State Stars’ on-form striker Diyo Sibisi is hoping to equal or overtake former Moroka Swallows star striker James Chamanga’s goal tally when the season ends on Sunday.

Sibisi and Chamanga are front-runners for the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot Award. The Stars striker is the second top goal scorer with 12 goals, behind Chamanga (14) who has recently joined Chinese outfit Dalian FC.

Sibisi said that even though it would be an uphill task to equal or overtake the Zambian international, he would try everything in his power to achieve his dream of becoming the Premier Soccer League’s top goal scorer.

”Despite the fact that it won’t be easy to score goals against a formidable side like Mamelodi Sundowns in our last game, I believe anything is possible in the game of football,” said the KwaZulu-Natal-born striker.

”I want to make sure in tomorrow’s [Sunday’s] game that I score the goals that I need so that I will become a league top goal scorer.”

Sibisi is not new in topping the goal-scoring charts. He won the Golden Boot award while he was playing for Vodacom Promotional League side Umhlathuze FC under the guidance of then coach Fani Madida, who is now assistant coach to Muhsin Ertugral at Kaizer Chiefs. He also won it in the Mvela Golden League last season.

Other players who are hoping to scoop the award include SuperSport United’s red-hot striker Katlego Mashego and Santos striker Erwin Isaacs. — Sapa
