A hearing to consider arguments regarding the sentencing of Andrew Jordaan, convicted killer of seven-year-old Sheldean Human, was postponed in the Pretoria High Court on Wednesday.
Acting Judge Chris Eksteen postponed the matter to Thursday to give Jordaan an opportunity to call witnesses that could testify in mitigation of sentencing.
”The court wants to grant you the opportunity … of you as a person, the court knows very little,” Eksteen said.
The state also indicated that it would argue in aggravation of sentencing.
Eksteen spoke out against ”those who are looking for sensation” in the case, saying he would not be pressured into hastily delivering a sentence.
Jordaan’s advocate, Khomotso Tlouane, informed the court that his client did not wish to be photographed by the media, and that they were doing so without his permission.
”The media must certainly respect his wish,” Eksteen said, adding: ”The permission must come from the accused.”
He, however, made no order preventing pictures taken earlier being published.
On Tuesday Jordaan was found guilty of the kidnapping, the attempted rape and the murder of Sheldean.
He was also found guilty of raping and indecently assaulting her eight-year-old friend.
On Wednesday his family, who still believes in his innocence, was in court again and they had a short discussion with Jordaan before he was taken to the cells.
Sheldean’s mother, Elize, and her father, Wikus, were also in court.
