A 30-year-old man is in a critical condition after falling down an elevator shaft from the 10th floor of a building in Pretoria on Thursday, paramedics said.
”Paramedics were told that a lift with the man in it had become stuck around the 10th floor at a block of flats in Kotze Street in Sunnyside … it is unclear how the doors opened, causing him to fall down the shaft,” said emergency services spokesperson Nick Dollman.
He said the man had fallen down to the basement level.
”The first arriving medical team had to climb down a ladder into the confined space of the sunken lift shaft where they attended to the victim … they also had to coordinate a plan to hoist him to safety.”
The local fire department was called to assist in the rescue.
The man was placed on emergency life support and transported by ambulance to the Pretoria Academic Hospital, where he was in a critical condition, Dollman said. — Sapa
