A mattress factory in Industria caught on fire on Tuesday, Johannesburg emergency Sservices said.
Spokesperson Percy Morokane said the fire started at about 8.30am at the Bita Foam factory and was burning very strongly.
”About 200 employees had to be evacuated, and at this stage no injuries have been reported. The fire is very strong and firefighters are trying to get the blaze under control.
”There are huge clouds of black smoke,” he said.
According to emergency services, the fire spread through the whole factory quickly.
”The whole factory is almost burned down and there is nothing the firefighters can do to salvage the building,” said Morokane.
The cause of the fire was still unknown and an investigation would be conducted. — Sapa
