Deputy mayor killed in KwaZulu-Natal

The deputy mayor of the Umkhambithini local municipality, Johnson Shlangu Mkhize, was shot and killed in Ngilanyoni in Mid-Illovo, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday, the African National Congress said on Sunday.

ANC provincial secretary Senzo Mchunu said Mkhize was shot and killed outside his parents’ house on Saturday night in Mid-Illovo approximately 40km west of Durban.

Mchunu said Mkhize had been a committed and capable leader.

”His death is a great loss not only to his family, but also to the ANC and the nation because of his contribution to a better life for all and his vision for our country,” Mchunu said.

”After the violence of the 80s and 90s, our country enjoyed relative peace,” he said.

”However, this incident is a reminder of how easily we can be returned to the terrible era of violence.” – Sapa
