Robbers steal R1m from under man’s bed

Two men stole R1-million from under the bed of a 45-year-old man in his home in Lambton near Germiston, east of Johannesburg, on the weekend, Gauteng police said on Monday.

Captain Steady Nawa said the victim of the robbery arrived at his house at 9.30pm on Friday.

He went to bed and was awoken by two men who pointed a firearm at him.

The robbers dragged him into the passage and tied his hands with shoelaces.

One of the robbers kept watch over the man while the other went into his bedroom and took R1-million from inside a white box under the bed.

The robber also lifted R60 000 from a black bag under the bed.

The man’s cellphone and two wrist watches — valued at R4 000 — were also stolen.

The robbers fled in the man’s white Toyota Corolla (registration LKT 780 GP).

No shots were fired and the man was not injured.

Nawa appealed to anyone who had information on the robbery to contact Captain Phinias Boshomane on 082 319 9887.

Nawa, who did not elaborate on why such a large sum of money was being kept in a private house, appealed to the public to use banking institutions. — Sapa
