Record number of South Africans in Open Championship

Veteran golfer David Frost’s qualification over the weekend for the Open Championship marks the largest South African contingent ever to play at the prestigious tournament.

Frost will be one of 13 local golfers to tee up at Royal Birkdale from July 17 to 20.

He will be joined by Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Rory Sabbatini, Trevor Immelman, Richard Sterne, Tim Clark, James Kingston, Hennie Otto, Doug McGuigan, Darren Fichardt, Thomas Aiken and Open debutante Josh Cunliffe.

The 48-year old Frost qualified courtesy of a top-five finish at the European Open on Sunday and comes just six days after missing out at the International Final Qualifier at Sunningdale, United Kingdom. — Sapa
