Gautrain drilling resumes, but not under Oxford Road

The Bombela Concession Company has been given the go ahead to resume with construction work in ten areas except under Oxford Road in Rosebank, the Department of Minerals and Energy Affairs said on Thursday.

A section of Oxford Road collapsed during drilling operations for the Gautrain rail project on Tuesday.

”The company was given a go ahead this [Thursday] afternoon to drill in the 10 other areas where drilling was halted, except on Oxford Road,” said spokesperson Bombela Bheki Khumalo.

The collapse created an eight metre by 12 metre sinkhole in the road between Eighth Avenue and North Road.

A Gautrain safety representative said at the time he had ”no idea” what had caused the sinkhole, which happened during drilling operations at about 1.30pm. – Sapa
