Vavi to receive Pan African award

Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi will receive the Pan African Lifetime Achievement Award from the TransAfrica Forum in Washington in December.

Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said on Thursday that the TransAfrica Forum was the oldest and largest African-American human rights and social justice organisation promoting diversity and equity in the foreign policy arena.

In a letter to Cosatu, chairperson and Hollywood actor Danny Glover said it was an honour to recognise Vavi’s commitment to the African diaspora over the years.

Craven said this exceptional honour, from such a prestigious institution, reflected the enormous respect in which Cosatu and its leaders were held around the world.

”Vavi is a worthy recipient of this award for his leadership and many other campaigns to transform the lives of workers and all the people of Africa.

”When he steps up to receive the award in Washington in December, it will be a proud moment for South Africa, Cosatu and the international labour movement,” Craven said. — Sapa
