Motlanthe to be sworn in as minister without portfolio

African National Congress (ANC) deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe will be sworn in as minister without Portfolio at the Union Buildings on Friday, the presidency

According to a statement, Motlanthe would be sworn in by Chief Justice Pius Langa at about 5pm.

”The president and members of Cabinet will welcome the new minister into the Cabinet,” said the statement.

‘Divisive elements’
Motlanthe on Friday took a swipe at ”divisive elements” within the party, saying they were motivated by greed.

Addressing delegates at the party’s Limpopo conference at the University of Venda, Motlanthe said divisions within the ANC had nothing to do with political differences.

”It has to do with accessing government positions and other centres of power … there is a greater interest in contracts and tenders.”

Honest members of the ANC should stand up to divisive elements bent on destroying the organisation.

”We cannot submit to those, who in pursuit of their own agenda, disrupt meetings, threaten comrades and resort to violence.”

Motlanthe warned that the ANC risked alienating voters if it did not adequately address its current internal struggles.

The conference — due to end on Sunday — pits premier Sello Moloto against Cassel Mathale, the party’s provincial secretary, in the race for the provincial chairmanship.

The conference is being held under tight security following clashes between supporters of Moloto and Mathale. – Sapa
