Main Harare police station hit by blast

A suspected bomb blast at Harare’s main police station shattered windows but caused no injuries, police said on Sunday, as talks on resolving Zimbabwe’s political crisis were set to resume.

The blast on Saturday night ”destroyed several windows in the CID administration block”, national police spokesperson Wayne Bvudzijena said, referring to the criminal investigation department.

”That is all we can say for now. We will issue a statement later today.”

The police complex is adjacent to one of the capital’s busiest bus stations.

The explosion came hours before negotiators for the ruling and opposition parties were due to resume talks on Sunday for a power-sharing government to end ruinous political chaos.

A spate of fire bombings occurred last year targeting police stations, with police blaming the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change party, which rejected the claims. — Sapa-AFP
