Teenager tells how rape affected her schoolwork

A teenage girl failed a grade at school after being allegedly raped by accused serial rapist Tsediso Letsoenya, the Cape High Court heard on Tuesday.

The teenager, who may not be named, told the court how Letsoenya confronted her and her boyfriend at about 8pm in March four years ago.

Letsoenya was a leading seaman in the South African Navy at the time of his arrest.

He has pleaded not guilty to 102 charges — 39 of rape, 33 of indecent assault, 12 of armed robbery, seven of kidnapping, six of assault, four of serious assault, and one of crimen injuria.

He is on trial before Judge Abe Motala and assessors Professor Bob Martin and Advocate E Keeton.

Questioned by prosecutor Heather Meyer, she said Letsoenya had threatened them with a gun.

At gunpoint, she was made to lie on her back, while Letsoenya ordered her boyfriend to lie on top of her and to rape her, while Letsoenya watched.

She said her boyfriend had pretended to rape her, before Letsoenya had ordered her boyfriend to sit on her chest while he raped her.

After the incident, Letsoenya stood up and walked away.

The girl said she had gone home after the incident, but had been too afraid to inform her mother because she did not know how her mother would react.

Later that same night, her boyfriend informed the girl’s aunt, who also lived in the girl’s parental home, about the incident.

They then went to the Nyanga Police Station to report the rape.

She said the ordeal had caused her severe trauma and loss of concentration, which had caused her to repeat her school grade. The case continues on Monday. – Sapa
