Pikoli against political solution for Zuma case

Suspended prosecutions boss Vusi Pikoli has rejected the idea that a political solution be found to the charges faced by African National Congress (ANC) president Jacob Zuma, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Wednesday.

Several groups, including the South African Communist Party and Business Unity South Africa, have argued that the continuation of Zuma’s trial is neither in the interests of the country nor that of justice.

However, Pikoli sides with those who disagree, the broadcaster said.

Pikoli was speaking on his return from Singapore, where he received an award for prosecutorial independence from the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP).

The award was made irrespective of the Ginwala commission’s inquiry into his fitness to hold office.

Pikoli was suspended by President Thabo Mbeki in September last year.

Pikoli was given the award during the 13th annual conference and general meeting of the IAP being held in Singapore from August 27 to 31. — Sapa
