Good reason to invest in SA business

“Increased foreign trade and investment in South Africa is the key to us being able to address socio-economic issues.” That is the view of Tony Pancaldi, the organiser of the trade and investment summit entitled Metropolitan — South Africa for the Global Advantage.

The summit, taking place at the Kyalami Conference Centre on May 28 and 29, will focus on increasing existing foreign trade with South Africa and look at ways to encourage new investors.

“Before we tackle the issue of new investments we need to encourage foreign companies already trading here to continue to do so and to expand their operations,” says Pancaldi. “The aim of the summit is to address any negative perceptions by tackling the very real concerns that foreign investors may have.

“We also need to show that South Africa is a politically stable and economically viable country, both pivotal to encouraging foreign investment.”

Speakers will discuss issues such as legislation, the role of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and black economic empowerment. British MP and Secretary to the United Kingdom Treasury Paul Boateng will discuss developing markets for public and private partners.

One hundred and forty delegates from 13 countries representing corporations and government bodies currently involved in bi- lateral trade agreements with South Africa will attend the summit.

“The summit,” says Pancaldi, “is geared to address the question of ‘why do business with South Africa?'” The Zimbabwe crisis and crime are two major deterrents to foreign investment in South Africa, and both will be covered in depth. Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Cheryl Gillwald will discuss the link between justice and business.

Trevor Ncube, the chairperson and CEO of M&G Media, will share his views on the situation in Zimbabwe, which is likely to impact on South Africa and the region.

Peter Vundla, Nolitha Fakude, Dr Danisa Baloyi and James Lennox will be some of the other speakers offering fascinating insights into their specialised fields.

An SMME exhibition will run concurrently with the summit. “The rationale behind the exhibition is that existing and potential investors will have the opportunity to meet and witness emerging business in action,” says Pancaldi. “However, at the same time emerging entrepreneurs will have the chance to showcase their products to potential trade contacts and have access to new markets, while under the mentorship of a trade association.”

The expo will be open to the public at no charge.
