At least 12 Mozambican football players and technical staff were killed in a road accident in the southern province of Inhambane, state radio reported on Wednesday.
The radio said the players of the Wane Pone team of the
country’s premier league died after their minibus ran into the back of a truck carrying steel pipes for a gas project run by South Africa’s petrochemical giant Sasol.
A further 13 people were injured, three seriously, in the accident in the district of Jangamo, near Inhambane city, some 400 kilometres north of the capital Maputo, Radio Mozambique said.
The Wane Pone team was on its way back to Inhambane from the northern city of Nampula, where it had played against the local team at the weekend.
The governor of Inhambane, Aires Aly, visited the injured on Wednesday and described the incident as a tragedy for the whole country.
