Dozens killed as bus plunges into river

The number of people killed in a bus accident outside Piet Retief in Mpumalanga on Tuesday has risen to 31, police said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Superintendent Abie Khoabane said 27 people were reported to have been killed on Tuesday when the Bhekezakho bus driver lost control of the vehicle and it plunged into a river about 45km from Piet Retief.

”The bus was coming from Piet Retief, travelling to Houtkop farm when the accident happened,” said Khoabane.

He said 27 people were injured and were taken to nearby hospitals.

It was not yet known how many people were on board the bus at the time of the crash. – Sapa
