Age is just a number, according to veteran Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Brian Baloyi.
The 34-year-old was recalled to the Bafana Bafana squad this week for the final 2010 Africa Cup of Nations Group Four qualifier against Equatorial Guinea in Malabo on Saturday. Kick-off is at 5pm.
Baloyi, who played 23 times for Bafana, was last in the national frame three years ago, but he is delighted to be back and determined not just to make up the goalkeeping numbers.
He is keen to push number-one goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune of Kaizer Chiefs all the way.
Said Baloyi: ”At 34 I am in my prime as a goalkeeper. Look at David James at Portsmouth. He is 38 and still going strong. Most people in England thought James’s career with England was over when he joined Portsmouth [two seasons ago]. But he bounced back with some brilliant performances with Portsmouth and was recalled to the England set-up. I believe I can do the same for Bafana.”
Baloyi returned to Bafana this week when Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs was forced to withdraw from the squad after picking up an injury in Pirates’ 1-1 Absa Premiership draw against Santos at Ellis Park last Saturday night.
Baloyi said he had missed playing for his country. ”It was only when I returned this week that I realised how badly I had missed Bafana. This recall has recharged my batteries. I am keen to make a contribution against Equatorial Guinea whether by playing or by helping Khune with my experience. I believe I still have a lot to offer.
”Who knows, if I keep playing well at club level then my Bafana career could be extended. I am grateful to get this chance, which has given my international career a new lease of life. I aim to make the most of it.” — Sapa
