Gold Fields reopens Kloof mine after accident

Gold Fields, the world’s number four gold producer, said on Friday it had resumed operations at its Kloof mine after the mine was shut down by authorities on Tuesday following the death of a worker.

Gold Fields restarted operations at its Driefontien mine on Thursday evening after the operation was forced to shut down when two workers died on Wednesday. Driefontein is Africa’s biggest mine.

The company said it got the government’s green light to restart operations on both mines, located near Johannesburg.

South Africa has an appalling safety record with about 140 workers dead in mines so far this year. — Reuters
