Road-rage accused fined R1 000

The man accused of assaulting an 82-year-old Alberton man in a road-rage incident was fined R1 000 after pleading guilty, Beeld newspaper reported on Saturday.

Sales manager Andre Dirker (38) pleaded guilty to assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm in the Alberton Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

His victim, World War II veteran Joe Duffy, was admitted to the intensive care unit and had facial reconstructive surgery. Duffy died in September 2006 in Alberton’s Union Hospital after a decline in his health.

Dirker assaulted Duffy after the pensioner drove into the back of his Nissan Sentra at about 7.30pm in May 2006, in Brackenhurst on the East Rand.

Dirker turned himself in about a week later. – Sapa
