Blue-light accused appears in court

A ”blue-light” VIP escort who allegedly shot out the tyre of a motorist, causing a head-on collision that injured eight people, appeared in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The accused, Constable Hlanganani Nxumalo (29) of Pietermaritzburg, faced eight charges of attempted murder.

The incident took place on the N3 near Camperdown on November 15.

Magistrate Thys Taljaard postponed the case to January 14.

Nxumalo was refused bail on November 19. It was, however, understood that an appeal against the dismissal of the bail application would be heard in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

No official could say whether the driver of the vehicle from which Nxumalo allegedly fired his gun would be charged with any offence. According to one lawyer, the least offence he could be charged with was leaving the scene of an accident. — Sapa
