Eskom awards R2,9bn Kusile works contract

Eskom said on Wednesday it has awarded a R2,9-billion contract for construction at its Kusile Power Station to a joint venture of South African companies.

”The contract provides for all main civil-engineering works including piling, foundations, column supports, floor slabs, basements and a utility spine and connectors beneath an auxiliary bay, the boiler house and the turbine hall,” the state power utility said in a statement.

It said Kusile, South Africa’s second greenfields coal-fired station to be built in more than 20 years, will cost an estimated R80-billion to build.

South Africa’s Stefanutti Stocks will lead the joint venture consortium, which also includes Group Five, Basil Read and WBHO Construction.

Construction under the contract should start in January 2009, with the first unit scheduled for completion in 2013 and the entire station expected to be completed by 2017. — Reuters
