ANC sees W Cape as election challenge

The African National Congress (ANC) recognises the Western Cape as a challenge in the run-up to the 2009 elections, the organisation said on Wednesday.

The organisation’s national executive committee (NEC) held a two day meeting in Esselen Park, Ekurhuleni.

The NEC decided to beef up its elections mechanism in the province after a low voter turnout in the Western Cape by-elections on December 10, said spokesperson Jessie Duarte.

”The turnout was caused by our inability to register candidates. We have taken full responsibility for the failure and we regret the outcome,” Duarte said.

In the meeting, the ANC reached a resolution to set up a team that will represent the ANC in the province.

”We will be deploying our cadres from national level to rebuild and consolidate our support base in the province. The team will soon be announced and it will take full political responsibility for the Western Cape,” she said. — Sapa
