Elizabeth Abrahams, known for her fight against injustice and the exploitation of workers, has died aged 83, the Western Cape African National Congress (ANC) branch said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Garth Strachan said Abrahams, known as Nana or Lizzy by those who worked with her, died at her home in Paarl on Wednesday.
According to Strachan, Abrahams acted as a ”moral compass” for activists around her, including Chris Hani, Archie Sibeko, Vivian Mathee, Abe and Myrtle Maart as well as Oscar Mapetha.
Strachan described Abrahams as an epitome of dedication, discipline, humility and honesty.
A former shop steward, ”Nana” became a member of Parliament and retired from there in 2000.
Congress of South African Trade Unions spokesperson Patrick Craven also paid tribute, saying Abrahams was a dedicated fighter for the rights of workers and women.
”We must build on the strong foundations laid down by stalwarts like comrade Liz, carry on the great work she devoted her life to and make sure that she will always be remembered,” Craven said. — Sapa
