KZN premier honoured at heritage celebration

Scores of people gathered at the eNgome village outside Greytown on Saturday to honour KwaZulu-Natal premier Sibusiso Ndebele for upholding culture and heritage, his spokesperson said.

With slaughtered cows and goats, Ndebele was honoured for posthumously re-instating the Zondi clan chief, Inkosi Bhambatha kaMancinza Zondi, into his chieftaincy in 2006, said Logan Maistry in a statement.

KaMancinza Zondi was dethroned in 1906 following his refusal to pay the poll tax imposed by the colonial government of Natal.

”It is with humility and pride that we accept this honour by Inkosi Mbongeleni Zondi and the Zondi clan who want to take the symbolism of the 2006 re-instatement of Inkosi Bhambhatha Zondi forward and make it part of the permanent living memory of our people.

”In 1994, a new democratic era dawned on South Africa. Today we live in the age of hope and respect for human dignity. We live in the age of hope through peace.

”Most of what Inkosi Bhambhatha lived for, fought for and died for, has been achieved,” Ndebele said. – Sapa
