Skierlik victims remembered

Hundreds of people gathered on Sunday at the Swartruggens cemetery to unveil a tombstone commemorating people who were killed in Skierlik last year.

Young people dressed in yellow T-shirts displaying African National Congress (ANC) president Jacob Zuma’s face sang songs condemning murderer Johan Nel, who shot dead four people and wounded eight others in Skierlik on January 14 last year.

After a service at the cemetery the crowd was expected to be addressed by North West Premier Edna Molewa in the town.

Nel, in a racially motivated shooting spree, shot and killed Enoch Tshepo Motshelanoka (10), Anna Moiphitlhi (31), her three-month-old baby Elizabeth Moiphitlhi, and Sivuyile Banani (35).

The Mmabatho High Court sentenced Nel to four life sentences for the murders. He was sentenced to an additional 68 years for the attempted murders.

Nel also received five years for illegal possession of a firearm and three years for possession of ammunition. A charge of damage to property was withdrawn. — Sapa
