Western Cape accident death toll rises

The death toll from an accident that occurred in Wellington in the Western Cape on Saturday has risen to 12, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported.

This, after a 22-year-old man died at Paarl Hospital. Police spokesperson Donwin Agenbach said the head-on collision occurred after one of the tyres of a bakkie burst, before it swerved in front of an oncoming vehicle.

The bakkie was carrying 10 passengers, which had two survivors.

Seven deceased occupants of the bakkie were on their way to a family member’s funeral.

The four passengers in the other vehicle, including a nine-year-old boy, also died on the scene.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide. — Sapa
